Kelly had originally contacted Prairie's Hardscape in need of an entire landscape renovation as well as additional interests in an outdoor living space with a fire feature, grilling area and space for the grandchildren to play closer to the rear of the home and deck area. Kelly is a care taker for the owner of the home as well who is wheel chair bound and must have the ability to enjoy this outdoor living space as well with ease. The major challenge with this outdoor living space was the difference in grade from the rear of the homes deck landing to the bottom story of which the majority of the grade planed out too.
When designing this rear outdoor living space, I was most concerned about Jennie being able to use and move throughout the entire space with ease and safety. In order to maximize the space in the bottom story, a brick paved handicap ramp was designed to transfer off of the rear deck of the home winding through a newly positioned multi terraced retaining wall area with landscaping on either side landing onto the new outdoor living space/patio area. When arriving onto the outdoor living space, Jennie needed to be sure that cover was not to far away weather it be a hot August sun or an abrupt storm that would run through the area so a pavilion was positioned in front of the outdoor fire place. A key factor to this brick paver ramp was the steepness of the ramp to not exceed over 1"-10 feet. This elongated the ramp which we used to our benefit to provide a winding path with plantings, flowers and outcropping/boulder accents on either side.
When landing below the pavilion, Jennie and Kelly have plenty of room to entertain with a kids, outdoor fire pit for roasting marshmallows, a kitchen area back below the deck and a hot tub area with beautiful outcropping and boulders placed on three of four sides. Beyond the brick paving and outdoor living space, a kids swing set was moved closer to the patio so the kids could play right off of the patio and living area.
